RMBF Research into Self-Directed Learning Groups for Sessional GPs

The RMBF has launched a paper looking at the role and efficacy of Self-Directed Learning Groups for Sessional GPs.

In addition to commissioning research into the needs of sessional GPs, we’ve also undertaken our own research project – exploring the value of Self-Directed Learning Groups as a way of helping to reduce professional isolation by providing local networks of peer support and continuing professional development. Our experience of working directly with sessional GPs has confirmed many of the findings of Durham University’s research, whilst also providing some additional insights.

As sessional GPs are an important group within primary care, we hope our findings will encourage discussion about their needs and encourage national policies and professional structures which will support sessional GPs in their careers.  Our findings suggest that Self-Directed Learning Groups (SDLGs) have value, are easy to establish and maintain, and provide a sustainable model on which to build career development. With wider professional support for SDLGs more sessional GPs could experience these advantages.  This would benefit patients, and the profession, as well as the sessional GPs themselves.
